Qatar Airways expands Boeing 777X order with 20 additional jets

Qatar Airways has placed an order for 20 more Boeing 777-9 aircraft, increasing the airline’s total 777X order to nearly 100. This order, finalized earlier this year, was previously listed as unidentified on Boeing’s order book.

As the launch customer for the 777X program, Qatar Airways currently holds orders for 60 of the passenger version, the 777-9. The airline is also the launch customer for the freighter variant, the 777-8, with 34 on order.

“Qatar Airways is proud to announce an expansion to the existing Boeing 777X aircraft order with an additional 20, totaling 94 Boeing 777X aircraft,” said Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer.

Keeping an eye on the future, we continue to ensure that all Qatar Airways passengers are only met with the best products and services available in the industry.”

The 777-9, boasting a capacity of 426 passengers in a typical two-class configuration and a range of 7,295 nautical miles (13,510 km), is the largest member of the 777X family. Boeing highlights the 777X program’s focus on fuel efficiency, environmental performance, and passenger experience.

“We appreciate their confidence that Boeing’s market-leading widebody family will provide outstanding fuel efficiency and a superior passenger experience for its global operations.”

This order comes as Boeing predicts strong demand for twin-aisle aircraft like the 777X in the Middle East. The company’s 2024 Commercial Market Outlook projects that such aircraft will constitute 44% of the region’s fleet over the next two decades.

In addition to the 777X aircraft, Qatar Airways has outstanding orders for 12 Boeing 787 Dreamliners and 25 Boeing 737 MAX airplanes.
