The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) is urging the public to comply with drone regulations following a series of unauthorized drone flights near Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).
Ten sightings of unlicensed drone operations were reported in 2023, with an additional four reported in the first quarter of 2024 alone. These incidents occurred within the airport’s 10-kilometer aerodrome radius, a restricted airspace for unauthorized drone activity.
“Operating drones within this restricted radius without proper authorization poses significant safety risks, including potential collisions with aircraft, which can result in severe damage and endanger lives,” the MIAA stated in a press release.
The MIAA emphasized the importance of adhering to regulations set by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), which carries serious legal consequences for violations, including fines and imprisonment.
To ensure compliance, the MIAA collaborates with local law enforcement and the CAAP to monitor and enforce drone regulations. They urge the public to report any suspicious drone activity to their local authorities.
“We encourage the public to report any suspicious drone activities… Public vigilance is crucial to maintaining the safety and security of our airspace,” the MIAA stated.
For detailed information on drone regulations and safety guidelines, individuals can visit the Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) regulations section on the CAAP website at www.caap.gov.ph.
