AirAsia Philippines and the Provincial Government of Leyte have renewed their long-standing partnership to enhance air connectivity and promote tourism in the Eastern Visayas region. The commitment was reaffirmed during a recent meeting at the Provincial Capitol between AirAsia officials and Leyte representatives, including Governor Jericho Petilla.
Since launching its Tacloban route in 2009, AirAsia has become a key player in the region’s air travel sector. The airline currently operates 28 weekly flights to Tacloban, providing crucial links for both local residents and tourists.
“Leyte holds a special place in the heart of AirAsia,” said AirAsia Philippines President and CEO Suresh Bangah. He emphasized the airline’s enduring commitment to providing affordable fares, noting its importance as repairs on the San Juanico Bridge continue.

In celebration of its partnership and its recent Skytrax award for the 16th consecutive year as the world’s best low-cost airline, AirAsia has launched a major seat sale. Travelers can book one-way base fares to Tacloban for as low as ₱516 until July 3, 2025, for travel between July 2, 2025, and March 31, 2026.
Leyte Governor Jericho Petilla praised the airline’s role, stating, “We want to thank AirAsia… Right now, I will tell you that it is only AirAsia I consider a partner.” He highlighted the province’s goal to make its diverse tourist destinations more visible with the airline’s support.
The partnership between AirAsia and Leyte is deeply rooted, particularly following the devastation of Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan). Leyte Tourism Consultant Frances Ann Petilla recalled the airline’s swift response, saying, “Hindi namin malilimutan nung panahon ng Yolanda kung paano kami tinulungan ng AirAsia. They were the first airline to offer seats.”
During that critical time, AirAsia allocated 250,000 free seats for victims and their families and raised nearly one hundred million pesos through the AirAsia Foundation to help rebuild homes in Tacloban, solidifying its role as a committed partner to the community.
