Air Hong Kong has officially entered a new era in its nearly four-decade history, completing a major fleet modernization by retiring its final A300-600F aircraft. The airline now exclusively operates Airbus A330F freighters, marking the successful conclusion of a seven-year re-fleeting program carried out in partnership with DHL Express.
The A300-600F served Air Hong Kong for 21 years, since it began operations with the type in 2004. Throughout its service, the aircraft played a critical role in Hong Kong’s position as a global air cargo hub, transporting close to three million tonnes of express cargo.
The updated fleet now consists of 14 Airbus A330 freighters—10 A330-300P2Fs and four A330-200Fs. Air Hong Kong was among the launch customers of the A330-300P2F (passenger-to-freighter conversion) and is currently one of the world’s largest operators of this type.
The A300-600F has been a stalwart of Air Hong Kong’s fleet and an important part of our story for over two decades. Its contribution to not only our business, but to the Hong Kong international aviation hub as a whole, has been considerable and we fondly bid farewell to this valued member of our fleet as we enter this exciting new chapter.
Clarence Tai, Air Hong Kong Chief Operating Officer
Tai emphasized the benefits of the newer aircraft, highlighting improved operational efficiency, sustainability, and enhanced cargo capacity.
The A330F offers a 25% increase in payload and volume compared to its predecessor and boasts a range of 7,400 kilometers. This has enabled the airline to launch new routes, including to Bahrain and Sydney, and better support the rising demand for e-commerce shipments.
Our decision to re-fleet aircraft years ago reflects our foresight to invest in ourselves so that we are ever-ready to support our customers.
Peter Bardens, DHL Express Senior Vice President for Network Operations & Aviation – Asia Pacific
The re-fleeting program began in February 2018 with the arrival of the first wet-leased A330F. Its completion aligns with broader growth initiatives at Hong Kong International Airport, including the rollout of the Three-Runway System.
As part of the Cathay Group, Air Hong Kong’s fleet modernization contributes to the Group’s HK$100 billion investment to expand Hong Kong’s aviation capacity. This includes the acquisition of more than 100 new-generation aircraft across Cathay Pacific, Cathay Cargo, and HK Express.
