A tragic vehicular accident occurred earlier today at the departure level of Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1. Initial reports confirmed that a vehicle crashed through an outer railing and struck pedestrians near the terminal entrance.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) confirmed the incident resulted in two fatalities: a five-year-old child and a 29-year-old male. Four other individuals sustained injuries and were promptly transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

According to New NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC), the operator consortium, the sport utility vehicle (SUV) involved was initially parked near the entrance. It reportedly accelerated suddenly, breaching the railing and hitting people on the walkway. The driver is now in the custody of the Philippine National Police (PNP).

An investigation involving NNIC, the PNP, Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) Security, and the DOTr is currently underway. The DOTr stated that an initial review of CCTV footage suggested the driver was dropping off a passenger, indicating no premeditated intent, though the investigation continues.

Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon noted the swift response of emergency teams in securing the area and ensuring the safety of other passengers. As part of the investigation, the driver is undergoing a drug test, and the Land Transportation Office (LTO) has suspended their license for 90 days pending results, the DOTr added.

NNIC President and San Miguel Corporation head Ramon S. Ang has personally committed to providing assistance to those affected. In a statement, NNIC announced Ang will shoulder the medical expenses of the injured and provide financial aid to the families of the deceased. “Our priority now is to make sure the victims and their families receive the support and care they need,” Ang stated.

Authorities, including NNIC and the DOTr, urge the public to refrain from speculation and avoid sharing graphic photos or videos circulating on social media out of respect for the victims and their families. Official updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
