Cathay Pacific integrates Apple’s Find My feature for enhanced baggage tracking

8

Cathay Pacific is stepping up its efforts to improve the passenger experience, particularly concerning baggage handling. The airline has announced a new feature that allows customers to use Apple’s Share Item Location, built on the Find My network, to track their delayed or mishandled luggage. This innovative integration aims to provide greater peace of mind and significantly enhance the baggage recovery process.

Passengers can now securely share the real-time location data from their Apple AirTags or other Find My network accessories with Cathay Pacific’s baggage service teams. This direct sharing capability is designed to help the airline more quickly locate and repatriate bags that have been delayed or misplaced. It represents a welcomed step in leveraging personal technology for improved airline operations.

Cheuk Lo, Cathay Pacific General Manager Airport Service Delivery, emphasized the airline’s commitment to customer satisfaction. “At Cathay Pacific, we’re continuously exploring new ways to further elevate the customer experience,” he stated. He added that the Apple Share Item Location feature is a “game-changer,” empowering both passengers and airport staff with faster and more efficient baggage recovery.

Utilizing the feature is straightforward for customers. They first generate a Share Item Location link within the Find My app on their Apple device. This link is then simply emailed directly to the baggage services team at their arrival airport. The airline will then add this link to the customer’s missing or delayed baggage file, enabling global airport teams to track the bag and expedite its return.

Privacy and security are central to this new system. Location sharing automatically ceases once a customer is reunited with their bag. Furthermore, customers retain full control and can stop sharing at any time, with all shared links automatically expiring after seven days.

The system operates on the Apple Find My network, a vast crowdsourced network of over one billion Apple devices. This network uses Bluetooth wireless technology to anonymously detect nearby items and report their approximate location to the owner, with all data end-to-end encrypted for maximum security.

To utilize this new baggage tracking feature, customers must ensure their Apple device is running iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, or macOS 15.2 or later.
