AirAsia Philippines has officially appointed Captain Suresh Bangah as its new President and General Manager, marking a strategic leadership change as the airline gears up for renewed growth.

Captain Suresh, a seasoned aviation professional with nearly 30 years of experience, takes over from outgoing president Ricky Isla, who retires after six years of service. Isla will stay on temporarily as Chief Advisor to support a smooth transition.

Previously serving as Group Director of Flight Operations at AirAsia Aviation Group Limited (AAAGL), Captain Suresh has held several key roles within the AirAsia network, including Director of Flight Operations and Chief Pilot at AirAsia X Berhad. He began his career with AirAsia in 2003 as a First Officer.

AirAsia Aviation Group CEO Bo Lingam emphasized that Suresh takes the helm at a pivotal time. “As AirAsia progresses into our next chapter, the Philippines remains a key pillar in our regional strategy,” Lingam said, highlighting the market’s potential in regional and domestic connectivity.

“With extensive management and industry experience—particularly in upholding the gold standard in safety and operational excellence, and a deep commitment to guest-centricity and Allstar values, Captain Suresh is well placed to build on the strong foundations laid by his predecessor, Ricky Isla.”

Under Ricky Isla’s leadership, AirAsia Philippines stabilized operations during the pandemic and helped rebuild customer trust. In 2024, the airline served nearly 7 million passengers and plans to expand its fleet to 19 aircraft by 2025 to meet growing demand, while maintaining a high load factor of 90%.

The company is also investing in digital innovations and ancillary services to enhance the travel experience, aligned with AirAsia’s broader strategy of transforming into a global low-cost network carrier.

“I am honoured to serve at the helm of AirAsia Philippines and look forward to working with the board members from AirAsia Aviation Group and AirAsia Philippines, Group CEO Bo Lingam, Ricky and the local team in one of our core markets to champion a new era of sustainable and profitable growth for the future,” Captain Suresh said, expressing his excitement to lead AirAsia Philippines into a new chapter.

“In this role, I am committed to leading our talented team of Allstars to elevate our operations while raising the bar on the end-to-end guest experience.”

He added that the airline remains aligned with national goals in boosting tourism and air connectivity, while navigating global challenges like fuel costs and supply chain delays.

AirAsia Philippines operates as part of the broader AirAsia network, which spans over 130 destinations with a fleet of more than 200 aircraft. The Group continues to pursue its long-term sustainability goals, including a net zero emissions target by 2050.
