The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) has directed its commercially operated airports to enhance safety measures. This initiative aims to safeguard both aircraft operations and surrounding communities from potential hazards.
Following a directive from Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon, CAAP issued a formal memorandum detailing the strengthened protocols. This document strictly prohibits activities identified as risks to flight safety and public welfare within airport vicinities.
Specifically prohibited activities include kite flying, unauthorized drone operations, and pigeon racing. Additionally, the use of lasers or other bright light devices that could distract or impair pilots, particularly during critical takeoff and landing phases, is strictly forbidden.
“These activities, though often unintentional, present serious threats not only to air travel but also to lives and property on the ground,” stated CAAP Director General Retired Lt. Gen. Raul L. Del Rosario. He emphasized, “Public safety is at the core of our mission, and we remain committed to preventing accidents before they happen.”
To ensure compliance, CAAP is actively collaborating with local government units (LGUs) and the Philippine National Police Aviation Security Unit (PNP AVSEU). This partnership aims to effectively monitor and enforce the new safety protocols around airport areas.
The Authority urges the public to cooperate fully with these safety measures. Citizens are encouraged to report any prohibited or suspicious activities observed near airport boundaries to help maintain the safety of Philippine airspace.
