Singapore Airlines (SIA) and its low-cost carrier, Scoot, will prohibit the use of power banks to charge devices during flights, effective April 1, 2025. The airlines announced the new policy, citing safety as their top priority.

The ban covers both charging power banks via onboard USB ports and using power banks to charge personal devices during the flight. This aligns with the International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) Dangerous Goods Regulations concerning lithium batteries, which power banks fall under.

Passengers are still permitted to carry power banks in their cabin baggage, but they remain prohibited in checked baggage. Power banks with a capacity of up to 100Wh are allowed without prior approval, while those between 100Wh and 160Wh require airline approval.

This move follows similar restrictions implemented by other airlines in the region. AviationUpdatesPH.com reported two weeks ago that EVA Air also prohibited the use and charging of portable batteries during flights starting March 1, 2025, after a fire incident possibly caused by a power bank.
