The Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) closed 2024 with impressive achievements, setting the stage for continued growth as operator Aboitiz InfraCapital Cebu Airport Corporation (ACAC) expands its footprint in the Philippine aviation sector.

The country’s second-busiest gateway welcomed over 11.3 million passengers in 2024, marking a 13% increase from the previous year. This milestone comes as Aboitiz InfraCapital, Inc. (AIC) celebrates its 10th anniversary and prepares to officially take over operations at Laguindingan International Airport in April 2025 and Bohol-Panglao International Airport in June 2025.

“Our vision for MCIA and our broader airports portfolio is to redefine the travel experience by integrating world-class operations, sustainable practices, and cultural relevance,” said AIC President & Chief Executive Officer Cosette V. Canilao.

MCIA further forged partnerships in 2024 to improve passenger services, including a collaboration with Cebu Pacific to enhance the overall airport experience. The gateway also welcomed United Airlines flights in July 2024, expanding its international route network.

Two innovative connectivity solutions were introduced: Cebu Connect, streamlining air-to-air transfers, and Cebu+, a partnership launched in February 2025 with Mactan Wharf Corporation and Supercat Fast Ferry Corporation to improve airport-to-seaport connectivity for travelers heading to nearby islands.

The airport’s commitment to accessibility earned it Level 1 Accessibility Accreditation from Airports Council International (ACI), recognizing its facilities for travelers with disabilities.

MCIA also reinforced its environmental leadership by becoming the first Philippine airport to receive a Platinum Green Airport Award and achieve Airport Carbon Accreditation.

The gateway began transitioning to sustainable Bridge-Mounted Equipment for aircraft on the ground, which was aimed at reducing both carbon emissions and operational costs. Additionally, MCIA signed a memorandum of understanding with ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East in October 2024 to accelerate its Net Zero Roadmap.

Passengers also benefit from MCIA’s Silent Airport initiative, the first of its kind in the Philippines, creating a more serene travel environment by reducing unnecessary announcements.

The Skytrax 4-Star Terminal 2 enhanced its cultural significance in 2024 with the installation of National Artist for Film Kidlat Tahimik’s iconic “Indio-Genius: Balikbayan #1 and 500 Years of Homecoming to Cebu” artwork, which transformed the terminal into a showcase of Filipino heritage.

MCIA also collaborated with the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the Cebu Tourism Investment Forum as part of Cebu Province’s 455th anniversary celebrations. This strengthened the airport’s role in sustainable tourism development for the region.

“MCIA’s 2024 milestones reflect our drive to create an airport experience that is efficient, sustainable, and uniquely Filipino,” said Athanasios Titonis, MCIA CEO.

With Aboitiz InfraCapital’s full assumption of ownership of ACAC (formerly Aboitiz InfraCapital GMCAC) toward the end of 2024, the airport is positioned for continued innovation as it helps redefine standards for world-class airport experiences in the Philippines.
