Embraer‘s E190F freighter, a passenger-to-freighter conversion of its E190 regional jet, has received full type certification from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), the company announced Monday. This completes a trifecta of approvals, following certification from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Brazil’s National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) in 2024.
The certifications allow the E190F to operate globally, positioning Embraer to compete in the growing air cargo market driven by e-commerce. The E-Freighter program was launched in May 2022, aiming to address the increasing demand for rapid deliveries and decentralized operations. The aircraft made its first flight and public debut in April and July 2024, respectively.
“EASA certification is a key milestone in our passenger-to-freighter conversion program,” said Martyn Holmes, Chief Commercial Officer, Embraer Commercial Aviation. Holmes stated that the program meets “the demand globally for faster deliveries, not just to metro areas, but all regions.”
Embraer states that the converted E-Jets will offer significantly more volume capacity and range compared to large cargo turboprops, and lower operating costs than larger narrowbody freighters. The E190F has a maximum structural payload of 13,500 kg, according to the company.
The E-Freighter program represents Embraer’s entry into a market segment traditionally dominated by converted Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 family aircraft.
