ANA Holdings announced Tuesday a significant fleet expansion with plans to order 77 new aircraft, including the first-ever introduction of Embraer E190-E2 regional jets to the Japanese market.

The aircraft order, approved by the airline group’s board of directors, includes 68 firm orders and 9 options across multiple aircraft types intended to support the company’s growth strategy through 2030.

The expansion plan focuses heavily on international growth, with 18 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners ordered for ANA’s international network. These wide-body aircraft, powered by GE engines, will help the airline capitalize on what it describes as “strong Asia-North America demand” and the planned expansion of Tokyo’s Narita International Airport.

This order will be the catalyst for improving the profitability of domestic flights and the expansion of international flights which is an area of future growth of our airline business. We will fully utilize this opportunity in order to become an industry-leading airline with sustainable growth.

Koji Shibata, ANA Holdings President & CEO

A notable element of the order is the introduction of 20 Embraer E190-E2 aircraft — comprising 15 firm orders and 5 options — marking the first time this 100-seat regional jet will operate in Japan.

The company stated these aircraft will help “achieve low fuel consumption and noise emissions” while reducing operating costs and providing “flexible supply-demand balance on domestic routes.” These aircraft are scheduled to enter service in fiscal year 2028.

The order also includes 14 additional Airbus A321neo aircraft and 12 Boeing 737-8 aircraft (8 firm orders and 4 options) for ANA’s mainline operations, primarily to replace aging aircraft in the current fleet.

For the group’s low-cost carrier Peach, the order includes 10 Airbus A321neo aircraft and 3 Airbus A321XLR aircraft. The A321XLR, with its extended range capabilities, is expected to support Peach’s growth on longer routes.

Additionally, ANA Holdings confirmed it has finalized previously announced options for 5 Boeing 787-9 aircraft and 10 Boeing 737-8 aircraft.

The company projects its total fleet will reach approximately 320 aircraft by fiscal year 2030, including approximately 120 Boeing 787 series aircraft. This expansion is expected to increase available seat kilometers (ASK) on international routes by approximately 1.5 times compared to fiscal year 2023 levels.

Environmental sustainability is also a stated goal of the fleet renewal plan, with the company noting that fuel-efficient aircraft will comprise 91% of its fleet once all new aircraft are delivered, contributing to the group’s environmental objectives.

The announcement comes as Japan continues to see strong recovery in international travel following the COVID-19 pandemic, with particularly robust inbound tourism numbers.
