Megawide Construction Corp. has been contracted to design and build a new passenger terminal building at Caticlan Airport, the gateway to Boracay Island, according to a Nov. 28 press release.
The airport is owned and operated by Trans Aire Development Holdings Corp. (TADHC), a subsidiary of San Miguel Corporation (SMC) Infrastructure, which has been involved in the airport’s development for over a decade.
SMC aims to complete the new terminal in under three years, with groundbreaking expected in December 2024. This latest development follows SMC’s long-term investment in the airport, including previous expansions of the runway and terminal.
“We believe that Megawide’s track record of building key infrastructure through efficient and sustainable practices will help us deliver a world-class facility within our committed deadline,” said Ramon S. Ang, chairman and CEO of SMC.
The new terminal will serve airlines such as Cebgo, Cebu Pacific, PAL Express, Philippines AirAsia, Royal Air Philippines, and Sunlight Air, which offer flights to destinations including Manila, Cebu, Clark, Davao, and Taipei, along with charter flights to several cities in China.
The expansion will further enhance the airport’s capacity, which increased with the 2016 runway extension allowing larger aircraft like the Airbus A320.
Megawide, known for its EPC operations and precast construction solutions, will apply sustainable practices to the project. The company has been involved in projects such as the Mactan-Cebu International Airport and the Clark International Airport.
“This will be another exciting opportunity for Megawide – to be able to work with one of the country’s largest and oldest conglomerates, San Miguel Corporation (SMC), and help realize its vision of a world-class facility at Caticlan Airport,” Megawide CEO and Chairman Edgar Saavedra said.
“We hope to impart our engineering excellence and be able to integrate our sustainable methodologies to this landmark development,” he added.
SMC’s history with the airport dates back to 2010, with a $300 million modernization plan announced in 2011. The conglomerate is also involved in other major airport projects, including the New Manila International Airport and the rehabilitation of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.
