Icelandair has officially entered the Airbus era with the delivery of its first A321LR aircraft on December 3rd, 2024. The new narrow-body aircraft represents a significant milestone in the airline’s 87-year history and fleet renewal strategy.
The A321-271NX, registered as TF-IAA and named “Esja,” was leased from SMBC Aviation Capital Limited. It features a two-class configuration with 22 Business Class and 165 Economy Class seats, providing flexibility for transatlantic routes.
Powered by Pratt & Whitney GTF engines, the aircraft delivers substantial environmental benefits. It offers up to 30% improved fuel efficiency compared to previous-generation aircraft, supporting Icelandair’s sustainability goals. The A321LR can operate routes up to 4,000 nautical miles and is already capable of using up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
Bogi Nils Bogason, Icelandair’s President and CEO, highlighted the strategic importance of this acquisition. “The A321LR unleashes new opportunities for our company and Iceland as a continental hub,” Bogason said.
Passengers will enjoy advanced features including Panasonic Astrova in-flight entertainment with 4K OLED displays, gate-to-gate WiFi, and an Airspace cabin with 60% more storage space. Geven-manufactured seats further enhance comfort and sustainability.
Icelandair plans to integrate three A321LRs before summer 2025, with an additional 13 A321XLRs planned for future delivery. This fleet modernization marks a significant transition from the airline’s long-serving Boeing 757 fleet.
