Aircalin, the flag carrier of New Caledonia, has announced an order for two Airbus A350-900 aircraft, signaling a significant step in the airline’s long-haul expansion strategy. The order, disclosed on December 12, 2024, will see the widebody jets join Aircalin’s existing fleet of two Airbus A330neo aircraft.
The new A350s will be configured in a three-class layout, accommodating over 320 passengers, representing a 15% increase in capacity compared to the A330neos. This configuration will also feature an expanded business class, catering to the premium travel segment.
“As a continuation of our long-standing partnership with Airbus, we have selected the A350-900 to join our fleet in the coming years,” said Georges Selefen, CEO of Aircalin. “These aircraft are essential for operating our recently inaugurated Nouméa-Paris via Bangkok route. They will open the doors to very long-haul flights and enable Aircalin to pursue its development strategy.”
Aircalin’s decision to incorporate the A350 into its fleet is particularly significant for its recently launched Nouméa-Paris route via Bangkok. The A350’s extended range will enable the airline to operate this route effectively.
Airbus highlights the A350’s fuel efficiency, claiming a 25% reduction in fuel burn, operating costs, and CO2 emissions compared to previous-generation aircraft. The aircraft is also capable of operating with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), with Airbus aiming for 100% SAF capability by 2030.
The carrier currently operates a fleet of four aircraft, comprising two A330-900 and two DHC-6-300 Twin Otter. It serves 12 destinations across 9 countries and territories, mostly in the Asia-Pacific region.
