Ethiopian Airlines has received its first Airbus A350-1000 aircraft, becoming the first African carrier to operate the largest variant of the A350 family, with revenue service beginning November 7.
The new widebody jet, registered as ET-BAW, was delivered at Airbus’ headquarters in Toulouse before departing for Addis Ababa. It is the first of four A350-1000s scheduled to join the airline’s fleet.
The aircraft will commence commercial operations with flights to Lagos, followed by service to Dubai, Accra, and London Heathrow. The carrier plans regular deployments to various African destinations including Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar, Abuja, and additional frequencies to Lagos throughout November.
London Heathrow service will begin November 9, initially operating three times weekly before adjusting to once-weekly service from December. The A350-1000 is configured with 395 seats, featuring the carrier’s largest business class cabin to date with 46 seats, complemented by 349 seats in economy class.
The delivery to Ethiopian Airlines, which currently operates 21 A350-900 aircraft, strengthens its position as the largest Airbus operator in Africa. The airline expects delivery of 14 additional A350 Family aircraft in the coming years, including 11 A350-900s and three A350-1000s.
Furthermore, the new aircraft will introduce Airbus’ HBCplus satellite communications system, providing high-speed gate-to-gate connectivity for passengers.
The A350-1000 shares significant operational commonality with the airline’s existing A350-900 fleet, allowing for streamlined pilot training and maintenance procedures. The aircraft can operate on up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
Powered by two Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engines, ET-BAW completed its first flight on October 14, 2024, before its delivery. The aircraft features a special “1st A350-1000 in Africa” livery marking this milestone delivery.
Congratulations Ethiopian Airlines. Keep on Inspiring the Continent.
