A misunderstanding between two passengers on Cebu Pacific Flight 5J486 sparked a security scare at Bacolod-Silay Airport yesterday, October 19, 2024, resulting in the deplaning of all passengers and cargo for a thorough inspection.

The incident occurred when passenger Mr. R. Aleroso asked fellow passenger Mr. Erise, “Oi, naubos na ba ‘yong watusi mo?” which refers to a condom in LGBTQ community language. However, the term “watusi” is also known locally as a type of firecracker, prompting a cabin crew member to clarify the meaning.

Upon learning the intended meaning, the cabin crew reported the matter to the Pilot-in-Command, who informed Cebu Pacific management. As a precaution, the airline decided to deplane all passengers and cargo for a K9 bomb-sniffing inspection and security paneling.

The inspection, conducted by the EOD/K9 unit from Bacolod-Silay Airport, cleared the aircraft by 1:00 PM, and the flight departed for Manila without further incident. Mr. Aleroso and Mr. Erise were rebooked on Flight 5J488, scheduled for later that afternoon.

Cebu Pacific, known for its commitment to diversity and inclusivity, has previously demonstrated its support for the LGBTQ community, notably with its first Pride flight in June 2023, crewed by LGBTQIA+ members and allies.
