Japan Airlines (JAL) and Garuda Indonesia have signed a Joint Business Agreement, paving the way for increased cooperation on flights between Indonesia and Japan. The agreement follows approval from Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism for Anti-Trust Immunity.

The joint venture, expected to launch in the second quarter of 2025, will allow the two airlines to collaborate on commercial operations for flights connecting Indonesia and Japan, as well as domestic flights within each country. The partnership aims to provide customers with more flight options, an expanded network, improved connections, and enhanced frequent flyer benefits.

Mitsuko Tottori, President and Group CEO of Japan Airlines, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership’s potential. “We are confident that with this partnership, we will be able to deliver important benefits to our customers and to grow the business between Japan and Indonesia,” Tottori said.

Irfan Setiaputra, President and CEO of Garuda Indonesia, highlighted the significance of the agreement for strengthening aviation ties between the two countries. “This partnership signifies a major step towards strengthening the aviation ties between the two countries and aimed to expand our business presence and enhancing connectivity between Indonesia and Japan,” Setiaputra stated.

The airlines’ current flight schedule demonstrates a robust connection between the two countries. JAL operates daily flights from Tokyo Narita to Jakarta and return, with additional flights on most days. Garuda Indonesia offers daily service between Tokyo Haneda and Jakarta, as well as daily flights connecting Tokyo Narita and Denpasar, Bali. These routes form the backbone of the airlines’ joint operations, with some flights subject to schedule adjustments on specific dates.

Both airlines are members of global airline alliances, with Garuda Indonesia part of SkyTeam and Japan Airlines a member of oneworld.

The joint business venture is subject to regulatory approvals, with further details to be announced as they are finalized.
