Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) has bolstered its international connections with the launch of two new routes by budget carriers Aero K and Cebu Pacific last week.
On October 2, Cebu Pacific sent off its maiden flight from Cebu to Bangkok (Don Mueang). The inaugural passengers on flight 5J 5958 and 5J 5959 to and from Don Mueang were treated with in-flight fun games and round-trip international tickets to lucky passengers.
Flights between the two cities are flown thrice weekly, every Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, aboard the airline’s Airbus A320 fleet.
The launch of a new direct air link to Don Mueang complements its existing Manila-Don Mueang service, inaugurated in July. Cebu Pacific also plans to further expand its Thai network with Davao-Don Mueang flights this October.
The airline’s expansion from Cebu continues with planned direct flights to Masbate, Osaka-Kansai, and San Vicente in the coming weeks.
South Korean low-cost carrier Aero K launched its Cheongju-Cebu service on Oct. 6. Operating twice-weekly flights with Airbus A320 aircraft, Aero K connects Cebu to the capital of South Korea’s North Chungcheong province.
MCIA officials welcomed the inaugural Aero K flight with a special ceremony, including a traditional water cannon salute.
The airport anticipates further international expansion by year-end. Philippine Airlines is set to resume Cebu-Osaka-Kansai flights in late December, while United Airlines will launch a Cebu-Tokyo-Narita service this month.
