Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) has received Level 1 Accessibility Accreditation from the Airports Council International for its facilities catering to Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).
The airport’s PWD-friendly amenities include wheelchair assistance, dedicated washrooms, ramp passageways and lifts, reserved seating, and priority boarding calls in both terminals. These facilities comply with the Accessibility Law (Batas Pambansa Bilang 344), adhering to standards for vanities, grab bars, and water closet heights.
Athanasios Titonis, CEO of Aboitiz InfraCapital GMR Megawide Cebu Airport Corporation, stated, “Travel should be a privilege, not a burden. Which is why we designed PWD-friendly amenities that cater to PWDs and their families.”
The airport has introduced sliding doors in PWD-friendly restrooms, emergency push buttons, and designated seating areas. Titonis described these as “pioneering advancements” in the Philippine airport community.
Ricia Montejo, Head of Customer Experience, emphasized the airport’s commitment to accessible travel. “We do this by complying with global travel standards and getting input from the PWD community before upgrading our facilities,” she said.
MCIA conducts an annual forum with PWD groups to gather insights on enhancing travel experiences for disabled passengers.
As the second-largest airport in the Philippines, MCIA serves over 11 million passengers annually. It is operated by a consortium of Aboitiz InfraCapital, GMR Group of India, and Megawide Construction Corporation under a concession agreement with the Philippine government.
The airport has also received accreditation for Airport Customer Experience and Airport Health from the Airports Council International.
