The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) is set to integrate an upgraded version of its Communications, Navigation, Surveillance/Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) system on Monday, September 30, at 4:00 a.m.

The $1.5 million software upgrade is part of CAAP’s efforts to modernize and enhance the functionality and stability of the Air Traffic Management System (ATMS).

The installation and launch of the updated ATMS software version fall under the existing software support and maintenance services contract with Thales, CAAP’s technology solution provider.

CAAP stated that the advancements are expected to result in “more efficient air traffic operations, reduced delays, and an overall smoother experience for both airlines and passengers.”

The software installation process is estimated to take approximately 60 minutes.

While the communication, navigation, and surveillance equipment used for air traffic operations will continue to function properly during the upgrade, CAAP has implemented contingency procedures to ensure flight safety.

These measures include increasing the separation time between departing flights, which may cause some delays.

“CAAP has taken precautionary steps… to ensure the safety of flights and passengers,” the authority said in a statement.

The upgrade is scheduled during early morning hours to minimize disruptions to air traffic.

A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) will be issued on September 28, 48 hours prior to the upgrade, to inform airlines and stakeholders of the planned changes.

CAAP emphasized its commitment to maintaining safety standards and service excellence, aiming to “deliver even safer, more efficient, and reliable air travel services.”

As the upgrade approaches, travelers are advised to check with their airlines for any potential schedule changes or delays on September 30 and the days immediately following, particularly for early morning flights.
