A Viking DHC-6-400 Twin Otter aircraft carrying 14 passengers skidded off the runway during landing at Pamalican Airstrip on Saturday morning, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) reported.

The incident occurred between 8:20 and 8:30 a.m. on runway 13, according to initial reports received by CAAP’s Operations and Rescue Coordination Center (ORCC). All passengers were reported to be safe.

“The aircraft is currently positioned in the middle of the runway,” CAAP stated in a media advisory. The agency’s Aircraft Accident Investigation and Inquiry Board (AAIIB) has launched a thorough investigation into the incident.

The aircraft involved, registered as RP-C6903, is operated by Island Aviation. It was delivered to the airline on May 26, 2023, making it approximately 1.4 years old at the time of the incident. The plane is configured to carry 19 passengers and is powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-34 turboprop engines.

Pamalican Airstrip, located on Pamalican Island in Palawan province, primarily serves the luxury resort of Amanpulo. The airport’s single runway is 1,100 meters long.

The DHC-6-400 Twin Otter is a STOL (Short Takeoff and Landing) utility aircraft produced by Viking Air, which acquired the type certificate for the de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter in 2006. The aircraft is known for its ruggedness and ability to operate in challenging environments.
