The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) has issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) for flights near Taal Volcano, effective from August 19, 2024, 8:48 a.m., to August 20, 2024, 9:00 a.m.

NOTAM B3294/24, which applies to altitudes from the surface to 10,000 feet, comes as the volcano remains under Alert Level 1 (Low-level Unrest).

“Flight operators are advised to avoid flying close to the volcano’s summit due to the possibility of sudden and hazardous steam-driven or gas-driven eruptions that may pose a risk to aircraft,” the CAAP stated.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported an average sulfur dioxide emission of 3,355 tonnes as of August 15 and observed “upwelling of hot volcanic fluids in the main crater lake.”

Volcanic smog has also been reported in Batangas and nearby areas.

No volcanic earthquakes have been recorded, but 2,400-meter tall plumes have been recorded. Entry into Taal Volcano’s danger zone, including the Main Crater and Daang Kastila fissures, is banned. Boating on Taal Lake is also prohibited.
