AirAsia Cambodia inaugurated its first international flight on Thursday, connecting Phnom Penh to Kuala Lumpur just three months after launching domestic operations.
Flight KT168 departed Phnom Penh International Airport at 12:25 p.m. local time and arrived at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (Terminal 2) at 3:15 p.m., greeted with a water cannon salute. The flight boasted a near-capacity load factor of 99 percent.
This new route, with seven weekly flights, complements existing AirAsia Malaysia service and signifies a commitment to bolstering tourism and economic ties between Cambodia and Malaysia, according to the airline.
“The load factor of 99 percent for our inaugural international flight today is extremely encouraging,” said Vissoth Nam, CEO of AirAsia Cambodia.
“Since our operations began in May, we have flown 25,861 guests domestically, and with the introduction of this international route, we aim to further strengthen the bond between Cambodia and Malaysia.”
Cambodia’s tourism sector has experienced significant growth in 2024, welcoming over three million international tourists in the first half of the year alone. AirAsia Cambodia anticipates this new route will further stimulate travel between the two countries.
Nam highlighted the airline’s dedication to supporting Cambodia’s tourism goals. He mentioned their sister company, Thai AirAsia, launching a Siem Reap-Phuket route in October and plans for AirAsia Cambodia to explore destinations like Cebu and Bali.
AirAsia Cambodia currently operates domestic flights connecting Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Sihanoukville. As part of the larger AirAsia Group, the airline offers connections to over 130 destinations across Asia and beyond.
