An explosion occurred approximately 2 kilometers from Zamboanga International Airport on Monday, causing minor damage to the facility’s check-in area but not affecting flights or passengers, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP).

The incident, which took place at 5:35 p.m. on July 8, resulted in damage to a check-in counter in the Passenger Terminal Building. Despite this, the airport continued normal operations after a thorough inspection.

An initial report from the Philippine National Police (PNP) indicates that the explosion was caused by a premature detonation during the disposal of confiscated firecrackers.

The disposal operation was being conducted by a joint team comprising members of the Regional Explosive and Canine Unit 9, Philippine Marines, Bureau of Fire Protection, and Philippine Coast Guard.

CAAP officials confirmed that no passengers were affected by the incident, and no flight delays were recorded.

The PNP is currently conducting a thorough investigation to determine the full details of the incident.

Zamboanga International Airport, located on the southern island of Mindanao, serves as a crucial transportation hub for the region, connecting Zamboanga City to other major cities in the Philippines and international destinations.
