China Southern, Malaysia Airlines expand codeshare agreement

New routes aim to strengthen air connectivity between China and Malaysia

China Southern Airlines and Malaysia Airlines have expanded their codeshare agreement to include three new routes, the companies announced Wednesday. The move aims to enhance connectivity and travel options between China and Malaysia.

The expansion adds codeshare flights on the Guangzhou-Penang, Kuala Lumpur-Beijing Daxing, and Kuala Lumpur-Shanghai Pudong routes. This follows the launch of codeshare flights on the Guangzhou-Kuala Lumpur route in July 2023.

China Southern Airlines plans to increase its capacity in the Malaysian market to 73 flights per week. Malaysia Airlines currently operates 54 weekly flights to China, covering Guangzhou, Shanghai Pudong, Beijing Daxing, and Xiamen.

Zhang Dongsheng, Deputy Director General of China Southern Airlines’ Commercial Steering Committee, said, “China Southern Airlines will continue to leverage its network advantages to explore new opportunities with Malaysia Airlines, and deepen our cooperation in more fields, aiming to bring greater air travel experience for all passengers.”

Ahmad Luqman Mohd Azmi, CEO of Airlines from Malaysia Aviation Group, added, “By expanding our codeshare agreement, travellers can now enjoy an enhanced travel experience, seamlessly connecting to more destinations with greater convenience and flexibility.”

The expansion coincides with the current visa-free policy for Malaysian and Chinese travelers between the two countries.
