Japan Airlines announced Wednesday the introduction of a special livery on one of its international Boeing 787-8 aircraft to commemorate the 2025 World Exposition in Osaka. The livery features the official Expo 2025 character ‘MYAKU-MYAKU’ and other design elements.

The ‘JAL MYAKU-MYAKU JET’ is scheduled to begin flying international routes out of Tokyo’s Haneda and Narita airports starting June 3, 2024. Routes include flights to Seoul, Taipei, Dalian, Shanghai, Ho Chi Minh City and Bangkok.

“With the operation of the ‘JAL MYAKU-MYAKU JET,’ Japan Airlines is committed to contributing to the success of the Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan,” the airline said in a press release.

This follows the debut of a special Expo 2025 livery in March on a J-AIR Embraer 190 aircraft flying domestic routes from Osaka’s Itami Airport. JAL plans to introduce a third special livery aircraft for domestic flights in the future.

JAL says the deployment of the international aircraft aims to promote Expo 2025 and encourage visitors to the event as well as other destinations throughout Japan. Expo 2025 will run from April 13 to October 13, 2025 on Yumeshima Island in Osaka.

The ‘MYAKU-MYAKU’ character is described as “a mysterious creature born from the unification of cells and water” with a red “cell” portion and blue “clean water” portion. According to organizers, its identity is unknown and it will be used to “publicize and foster momentum” for the expo.

Expo 2025’s theme is “Designing Future Society for Our Lives.” The event will explore topics like sustainability, innovation and cultural diversity.
