The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) has commenced a months-long electrical systems upgrade project at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 that will run until May 28, 2024.
This initiative involves replacing deteriorated medium voltage switchgear components across eight electrical substations within the terminal building.
Eric Jose Ines, MIAA General Manager, explained the necessity of these works: “We apologize to all our airport stakeholders. Rest assured that the benefits of this electric systems upgrade will far outweigh the inconveniences it may bring in the course of its implementation. We seek for more patience and understanding from everyone.”
To minimize disruptions, the power shutdowns will be conducted sectorally and carried out starting at midnight when flight schedules are lowest.
However, passengers may experience reduced air conditioning supply in certain areas as well as some inoperative elevators and escalators during the maintenance periods.
The airport authority has stationed standby generator sets at each substation to ensure an uninterrupted power supply to critical systems, allowing for continuous processing of passengers and flights.
This is a continuation of the Terminal 3 electrical upgrade project that commenced in 2023.
An initial phase was undertaken last November 29 to December 13, during which no serious disruptions to passengers or flight operations were reported according to MIAA.
