Lufthansa Group’s newest airline, Lufthansa City Airlines, is preparing to launch its flight operations on June 26, 2024. The inaugural flight will depart from Munich and arrive in Birmingham.

Lufthansa Group operates several airline subsidiaries, including Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Discover Airlines, Eurowings, Lufthansa Cargo, Lufthansa Regional (Air Dolomiti and Lufthansa CityLine), Swiss International Air Lines (Edelweiss Air), and holds stakes in ITA Airways, AeroLogic, and SunExpress.

Starting April 24, 2024, passengers can book tickets on Lufthansa City Airlines’ feeder services for Lufthansa, as well as direct flights between Munich and various destinations, utilizing the new airline code “VL” through Lufthansa Group’s sales channels.

Initially, Lufthansa City Airlines will operate from Munich to European and German domestic destinations like Birmingham, Hanover, and Düsseldorf, utilizing aircraft from the A320 family.

However, the airline has placed an order for 40 brand-new, fuel-efficient Airbus A220-300 aircraft and an additional 20 purchase options, signaling future growth plans.

“Lufthansa City Airlines is contributing to the future viability of the hubs in Munich and Frankfurt. We are looking forward to new modern Airbus A220 and A320neo deliveries in the coming years. For our guests and employees, we are driving forward our renewal and thus strengthening Lufthansa’s planned growth in long-haul traffic.”

Jens Fehlinger, Lufthansa City Airlines Managing Director Operations

As Lufthansa City Airlines’ fleet expands, the airline plans to gradually add more destinations across Europe to its network.

Lufthansa says that passengers can expect the same proven mainline product and service offering on board for short and medium-haul routes.
