A United Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft (with registry N27290) operating as Flight UA-2477 from Memphis, Tennessee, to Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport experienced a runway excursion upon landing on Friday, March 8, 2024.

The incident occurred around 7:58 AM (UTC-6) as the aircraft was attempting to turn off Runway 27 onto a taxiway.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the aircraft “rolled onto the grass when exiting onto the taxiway.”

The plane, carrying 160 passengers and 6 crew members, veered off the runway after touching down and came to a rest on soft ground with its left main gear collapsed.

An article from The Aviation Herald stated a passenger reported that the landing was normal, but as the crew attempted to turn off the runway at taxi speed (approximately 30 knots), the aircraft skidded and went straight after turning about 45 degrees before ending up on the grass.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has dispatched an investigation team to Houston to probe the runway excursion. The FAA has also stated that they will investigate the incident.

United Airlines confirmed that all passengers and crew members were safely evacuated from the aircraft and bused to the terminal. No injuries were reported.

The airline stated that they are working to retrieve luggage from the aircraft and reunite passengers with their belongings.

The NTSB, FAA, and Boeing will collaborate with United Airlines to determine the cause of the incident.
