Thai Airways has announced a significant order for 45 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft to modernize the airline’s widebody fleet and support a long-term strategy that includes network expansion and fleet renewal.
The new aircraft will replace older models and offer improved fuel efficiency and a reduced environmental impact.
Thai Airways plans to equip the new 787s with GEnx engines, known for their advanced technology and lower emissions, aligning with the airline’s commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
Chai Eamsiri, Thai Airways CEO, said:
To accomplish our company’s and the national carbon neutral goals by 2050, the 45 new Boeing 787 Dreamliners will be equipped with GEnx engines, which are known for their cutting-edge technology and reduced environmental impact.
Brad McMullen, Boeing Senior Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing, commented:
Thai Airways’ strategic investment in the 787 Dreamliner builds on our long-standing partnership and signifies the airline’s commitment to operate a modern, efficient and flexible fleet.
McMullen further added that the new order will support the Thai carrier’s ability to meet the growing demand in the aviation industry, thereby fostering tourism and trade.
The order was initially listed as unidentified on Boeing’s Orders & Deliveries website in December 2023. It reflects a growing demand for widebody aircraft in Southeast Asia, where a three-fold increase in fleet size is projected within the next two decades.
