The Laguindingan Airport, the second busiest in Mindanao, is set to undergo a significant expansion that will increase its passenger capacity by 72 percent.

On February 4th, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Jaime Bautista and Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) Director General Captain Manuel Antonio Tamayo led the groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion of the Passenger Terminal Building (PTB).

The expansion will address the current issue of congestion at the airport, which currently accommodates 790 passengers at any given time, exceeding the pre-departure terminal’s capacity of 500 passengers. With the expansion, the pre-departure terminal’s capacity will increase to 860 passengers.

The project will employ a modular construction method using pre-fabricated structural steel. This innovative approach is cost-effective, allows for swift construction, and is sustainable.

Upon completion in June 2024, the expanded airport is expected to provide efficient and comfortable travel for passengers. The Laguindingan Airport serves the cities of Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, and Marawi and the provinces of Misamis Oriental, Lanao del Norte, and Bukidnon in Northern Mindanao.

According to data from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Laguindingan Airport recorded 8,009 departures for 2023. The airport presently has connections to 10 domestic airports, all connected by Cebu Pacific, Philippine Airlines, and AirAsia Philippines combined.
