Japan Airlines (JAL) is offering fee-free booking changes and ticket refunds to passengers impacted by a recent collision at Haneda Airport.

On January 2nd, JAL flight JL-516 collided with a Japan Coast Guard aircraft while landing, resulting in a runway fire. Fortunately, all passengers and crew aboard the JAL flight were safely evacuated.

“We regret to inform you that on the evening of January 2nd (Japan time), JL-516 was involved in a collision with a Japan Coast Guard aircraft during its landing at Haneda Airport, resulting in a fire on the runway,” JAL stated in a travel advisory.

“In consideration of the impact of this accident, we will accept booking changes or ticket refunds without any fees for customers who have a booking on our flights as follows.”

To address concerns and provide flexibility for passengers, JAL is implementing the following measures:

  • Eligible flights: All JAL Group domestic and international flights booked through January 2nd, 2024, are eligible for the changes and refunds, up to March 31st, 2024. This includes code-share flights.
  • Booking changes: Passengers can change their booking to an alternative flight within the eligible travel period without any fees. For international flights, changes must be made by April 20th, 2024. Domestic flight changes can be made up to 30 days from the original departure date.
  • Ticket refunds: Full refunds are available for both international and domestic flights. For international flights, cancellations and refunds must be made at least 3 hours before the departure time online or through a dedicated refund form. Domestic flight refunds must be requested at least 20 minutes before departure online or via the dedicated form.

Booking changes or ticket refunds must be made on or before January 31, 2024, according to the airline.

For passengers who purchased tickets through a travel agency or another airline, JAL advises contacting the point of purchase directly for information on their options.

JAL emphasizes its commitment to safety and cooperation with the ongoing investigation into the accident. The airline acknowledges the disruption this incident may have caused passengers and expresses its appreciation for their understanding and patience.
