Malaysia recently welcomed a new addition to the skies as SKS Airways launched its first flight.
Amid the ongoing recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, SKS operated its maiden flight on January 25 from Subang Airport near the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur to the northern island of Pangkor. SKS’s maiden flight is also the first airline to operate scheduled flights to the island.
The flight saw the use of SKS’s DHC6-300 Twin Otter turboprop aircraft which are capable of Short Take-of and Landing (STOL).
“As a new set-up, we are nimble, agile and flexible and able to tap into any opportunities that arise. We are positioning ourselves to capitalize on the current pent-up demand for domestic travel,” SKS Airways director Rohman Ahmad said during the launch event at Subang Airport.
The launch of SKS Airways’ first flight comes after more than four years since the formation of the company in 2017. Part of the Malaysian/Australian firm SKS Group, SKS was awarded an Air Operator Certificate (AOC) By the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) on October 1, 2021. At the start of 2022, the airline was then awarded its full Air Service License (ASL) by the Malaysian Aviation Commission (MAVCOM).
SKS plans to offer passenger, charter, and cargo services from its hubs of Subang and Senai (Johor Bahru) initially to remote island resorts that are accessible only with boats and land transportation. The airline then plans to launch connections to other points in Malaysia, ASEAN, and southern China.
