Lion Air Group to furlough a third of its staff

161

With the COVID-19 pandemic continuing to affect the aviation industry more than a year since the initial outbreak, Indonesia’s Lion Air Group will furlough a third of its staff.

The budget carrier group announced it will put around 8,000 of its 23,000 employees – or around 34% of its workforce – on furlough effective immediately “until further notice.”

In a statement, the Lion Air Group stated the decision was taken to “maintain the business and company’s sustainability, streamline company operations, reduce costs and restructure the organization amid aviation operational conditions that have yet to return to normal from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Lion Air Group is comprised of Lion Air, Batik Air, and Wings Air along with its regional subsidiaries Malindo Air in Malaysia and Thai Lion Air in Thailand.

The group further added it is currently operating at around 10-15% of its pre-pandemic capacity with around 1,400 flights a day.
