United Airlines to relax appearance standards for customer-facing employees

57

United Airlines will soon relax its appearance and grooming standards for its customer-facing employees, a move which it says will “create a more inclusive culture” and “reflect a more modernized look.”

In an internal memo sent to all employees last Wednesday (June 16), United Airlines said the revised policy, which will take effect beginning September 1st, will include “significant” changes to the company’s rules on visible tattoos, nose piercings, hair, makeup, and nails.

United did not provide specific information on what the revised policy will allow, but the announcement did include a preview of some of the changes that employees can expect.

According to United, the relaxed appearance standards will initially apply to flight attendants and customer service representatives. Later in the year, the new guidelines will also be extended to pilots, ramp service employees, and other employee groups.

The complete details of the revised policy are expected to be released in July.

“As the face of United, our customer-facing teammates can provide an even better experience for our customers when they look and feel their best,” Kate Gebo, United’s Human Resources and Labor Relations EVP, said in a statement.

She continued: “We’ve spent the last several years listening to the feedback we’ve received from our employees and our Business Resource Groups to develop these revised standards. We’re confident that these modernized and more gender-inclusive appearance standards will provide a more authentic representation of the people and cultures that make United the company it is today.”
